Dark Creatures

Lesson Two:

Augurey:

M.O.M Classification: XX

This creature is native to Britain and Irelan, like the Grindlow, though it is somtimes foundn in northern Europe.   An Augurey is a thin and mournful-looking bird.  Some say it looks like a small and underfed vulture in appearance, however the Augurey is greenish black.  It has a distinctive low and throbbing cry and was once believed to foretell death.  Though Wizards avoided the Augurey nests for fear of hear the cry, research eventually revealed that the Augurey sings at the approach of rain.  For awhile it was a fad to own one as a home weather forecaster.  Many found it's moaning during the winter months difficult to heed due to the fact that the Augurey almost constantly moaned during those months.

Augurey's feast on large insects and fairies.  The are extremely shy, nests in bramble and thorns and only fly in heavy rain.  Most of the time the will hide in it's tear-shaped nest.

Ashwinder:

M.O.M Classification: XXX

Let's start with an important fact. Ashwinders are created when a magical fire is allowed to burn unchecked for too long.  To clarify, a magical fire is when a magical substance, such as Floo powder, has been added.  Since Floo powder is mainly used by the adults of Hogwarts, there should not be any Ashwinders slithering around the corridors.

Ashwinders are found worldwide and are a thin, pale grey serpent with glowing red eyes.  This creature will rise from an unsupervised, magical fire and slither away into the shawows.  They leave an ashy trail behind them.

Since the Ashwinder only lives for one hour, it spends this time trying to find a dark and secluded spot to lay it's eggs.  Once they have been laid, the Ashwinder collapses into dust.  The eggs that have been laid are bright red and give off intense heat.  If these eggs are not found quickly and frozen with a suitable charm, the dwelling that they are in will ignite into flames.  Frozen Ashwinder eggs are used in Love Potions and may be eaten whole as a cure for ague.

Bundimen:

M.O.M Classification: XXX

Bundimen are another creature that can be found worldwide, infestations in home.   A resting Bundimen looks like a patch of greenish fungus with eyes. However if it is startled it will scurry away on it's spindly legs.  It is known for creeping under floorboards and behind skirting boards.  The presence is known in a home by the foul stench of decay.  The creature oozes a secretion which rots away the foundation of the dwelling where it is living.   Bundimen feed on dirt and can be removed with Scouring charms.  If for some reason the Bundimen have been left to grow large, teh Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division) should be contacted before the house collapses.

Bundimen secretion, in a diluted form is used in certain magical cleaning fluids.
